Solar Imaging Jun 12 2020

It's been a while since updating this page, now In June after 3 months working from home due to COVID-19

Took a day off and imaged the Sun

Got very good results!

H-Alpha Image of the Solar disk with Sunspot 2765

When I started my session on visual, the Sun had a very big M shaped prominence

By the Time I set the computer and started imaging the prominence had broken and captured the remainings fliying away from the Sun.

H-Alpha Image of the Solar disk with Sunspot 2765 and prominence

After that I decided to increase power to 2x, I liked the result

H-Alpha Image of the Solar disk with Sunspot 2765 and prominence

on this image the area arpund the prominence is very well defined as is the now dissipating prominence

And event attempted to go to 5x power

All images with a Telescope Lunt LS50 and a DMK 41AU02

North America Total Eclipse 2017

Aug 21 2017 1:18pm

I traveled with my wife to the path of totality here are the images.

Set!

Waiting...

The Moon was on time...

Hover the mouse over the image to see where the moon was

And came along with her show...

A few minutes before totality a cloud!

But everyone there began to blow hard and it went away...

At 1:18PM CDT Totality!

Karlinda took these pictures during totality!

Note the camera tries to compensate for the low light condition i changed the curves to make the image show what I saw

The lights of the parking lot iluminated the scene, see the shdows on the umbrellas and the dawn like light all around in the horizon!

There are no words to describe this event, for me is the most beatiful thing you would ever see through a Telescope!

Would you marry me?

(diamond ring)

Want a bigger ring?

Karlinda captured Venus, do you see it?

An attempt to HDR

And my favorite!

A second attempt to HDR and my new favorite!

- All images taken with a Canon 50D and a Williams Optics ZS66SD APO,

- Camera controlled with DSLR Controller on a Samsung Tablet

- Mount Meade LXD-75

- Location: Perriville Airport 37.52 N, 89.51 W

- Conditions partially cloudy.

- Temperature change: Even when we did not take formal temperature readings, we did follow the drop, the results are on the following table:

Phase Temperature (F)
Start Partial 101
1/2 way 92
Totality 84
4th contact 96

Special thanks to Thomas Ernst, he waited and watched the event with us, he also provided cold drinks to beat the intense heat.

French Camp 2016

Jun 7 -10

Along with 5 fellow astronomers set the equipment at the Rainwater Observatory at French Camp, MS

We had hot days and cooler nights and seeing improved each day.

This is how the setup looked (the white plastic cover is protecting a USB3 connector from dew)

I was barely able to defeat dew and had to set the heater at almost maximum power to protect the equipment,

the tarp were the scope is placed helped too, one of my peers had to stop his session

as his equipment was dripping water that could get to the electronics and cameras.

And now what you came to see...

Mars!

This image was taken on 06-07 the worst seeing conditions of the whole week, but was the best I could get from the red colored robot inhabited planet.

Saturn!

This is the real image I got, when I published it in Facebook it got size distorted and the color red shifted - bummer!

Jupiter and Io transit

M13, my favorite star cluster located on the constellation Hercules.

About 300,000 stars!

M4 on Scorpius

More than 20,000 stars!

M51 on Canes Venatici

04/09/2016

Sunspot 2529

In preparation for the Mercury transit I have been working with solar imaging

These are today's results

Conditions were not the best today, but got two good images of the Sun in H-Alpha

Lunar X

On March 15 2016 we had another visible Lunar X

I got several images of the X before it was fully visible, after that we had an impromptu star party in the neighborhood and I didn't take any more images.

Here it is...

And a third image of a feature I've never see before and I named the Lunar Crab

New mount - New Image of Orion Nebula

On December 2015 I got an offer that could not let go: an almost new Orion Atlas EQ-G mount for a very good price...

After some learning curve I finally was able to do some Guided imaging, guess what was my target? Yes, you got it Orion Nebula

Below a series of images taken at different exposures, only one frame of each

25 seconds

30 seconds

60 seconds

And the extreme test! 300 seconds

Venus, Mars and Jupiter in cojunction (with Mercury photobombing)

On Oct 20 I captured the conjuction of Venus, Jupiter and Mars from the window in my kictchen. In this image I didn't capture Mercury that was low on the horizon and blocked by the trees. Mars even when visible was not captured on this image as it was too close to Júpiter

The magnitudes (brightness) of each of the bodies were:

Mars: +1.7

Jupiter: -1.8

Venus: -4.4

Wich means Mars was 275 times dimmer than Venus!

Oct 21 I tried again with my phone and my DSLR camera here are the results

With my phone

and the DSLR camera

On this image we have 4 of the 6 planets! if you don't see them roll the mouse over the image.

Also took a zoomed image of Mercury that I have never imaged before...

Lunar Eclipse Sep 27 2015

On sep 27 2015 there was a Lunar Eclipse that matched what is called a "Supermoon" (a full moon that happens when the moon is closest to the earth).

The Memphis Astronomical Society set a public obvserving session, I was able to show the moon in the Telescope and at the same time capture some images, unfortunately it was mostly cloudy during the event.

19:30 Full Moon

20:49 well into the Umbra

21:55 about to leave the totality, and yes the little white dot is a star HIP1545 a magnitude 3 star located in Piscium, this image is really noisy, the camera did a good job on imaging the full moon, but rendered a lot of noise whe the exposure was increased to capture the totality, if you cannot find the star here is a tip: 4 o'clock, if you still caný find it, move the mouse over the image.

Sunspot AR-2414

After a long period of no imaging here are my lastest images of the SUN and AR2414

Even when I took images in white light, the images were too simple and without detail, probably because the conditions were not the best.

Now, a look at the upcoming AR2415

Comet Lovejoy

Jan 17 2015 captured from the Burton's Suger Farm

This is a stack of 6 images at ISO 6400, 10 seconds each, Canon T3 prime focus on Celestron C8

No tail was detected either visually or with the camera.

Then switched targets but it was too late clouds were rolling and the wind picked up

Just had time for this 60 second image of M42 and M43 (Orion Neblula)

SUNSPOT 2192

On Oct 19 I captured a quick photo of the whole disk with the Suspot 2192 appearing on the Limb

The seeing was not very good as it was late afternoon I only captured one image @ISO100 and 1/500 sec on Prime focus on the 66mm refractor

And in H-Alpha with ISO 1600 @1/2000 + 2X-Barlow on the Coronado PST, but the image does not do show all the details that I saw on the eyepiece.

First M57 image

M57 (Messier object 57) or the Ring Nebula has been one of my favorite targets for visual observing.

On September 23-26 I trabelled to Rainwater Observatory and even with some technical difficulties I was able to get a decent image of the object.

This image is a stack of the best 12 of 20 images of 30 seconds each, Prime Focus on Celestron C8, Camera Canon T3, LXD-75 Mount.

M57 is a planetary nebula, a star with a size not enough to become a Supernova but as its fuel burns up will expand and send away layers of its atmosphere that later glow in beautiful colors.

In H-Alpha

And yes, that is a prominence at the limb on the bottom left

I did image the promineces, but did'n realize I overexposed them until it was too late and the images were useless

And the whole disk in H-Alpha

And now with Prominences

I did image the promineces, but did'n realize I overexposed them until it was too late and the images were not the best

I tried a tecnique that worked (i think well) and allowed me to show the prominences...

What do you think?

Attempts during Mars opposition

This year's Mars opposition is the closest in a few years, so I have decided to image it with the new cameras

On April 9 (one day after opposition I went out and started with the Moon, to get the fluids going)

Copernicus  (Center, 56Mi Diameter), Reinhold (South, 29Mi diameter) and Eratostenes ( Northeast)35 Mi Diameter)

Cráteres Copérnico (Centro, 95Km Diámetro), Reinhold (Sur, 49Km Diámetro) y Eratóstenes (Nor-Oeste, 60Km Diámetro)

The mountain chain  to the northwest is called Montes Carpatus that have a height of 7300ft, the smooth area northwest is to the South of Mare Imbrium.

Next Target: Jupiter

Proximo blanco: Júpiter

The atmospheric conditions were not the best (bad seeing) and imaging the planets was a challege.

Jupiter with two moons:  Ganymede (right) and Io left and yes, you can hint the GRS was on!

And... A little bit closer

Y... Un poco más cerca...

To watch this image I would suggest to get away from the screen and you will see details pop, including the GRS

And Mars? you ask...

Y marte? preguntan...

Conditions after many attempts allowed me to just obatin this image

You can see the frozen pole and some other feautures, but relly not much and yes those two filaments are processing artifacts

Addendum...

Addenda...

It seems my monitor is uncalibrated and the images had a greenish tint, my Firend Antonio Ballesteros (who works for the biggest observatory in Venezuela) sent me some tips and corrected images.

The moon and the moon X

I was finishing my Solar imaging session and found the Moon was high and ready to be imaged, so I pointed my scope to it

This is the first atempt

After I had captured a couple more ove videos including one taken at the exact first quarter I realized the Moon X was visible

Here is the Image taken from that video that captured tyhe moon on its first quarter the X is visible.

The Solar session didn't produce good results, seeing and operator error that saved the videos in DV format and lost a lot of the resolution in the images contibuted to the poor results.

Jupiter

I had not being able to image Jupiter during this season so on Oct 30th I did

I was informed that two moons Europa and Ganimede were about to transit.

Esa misma noche supe que Europa and Gamimedes estarían transitando el planeta

I setup the Telescope and placed the 3x Barlow, it looks like I was too greedy, the seeing did not help

The two moons can be seen on the top left quadrant

SUNSPOT 1039 (Continued)

On Jan 1st I was able to capture during a beatifull new year's day

SOHO Image                                                      My own Image

With 2x Barlow

And with 3X Barlow

Also tried in Afocal Method with my Casio Camera

Also tried some other ways of imaging

This picture was taken with the Baader Solar filter and a IR pass filter, what the camera captured was the light that can make thorugh the solar filter and can pass though the IR pass filter my guess it's that it may be just H-Alpha light...

This image is a direct attempt to image the Sun directly with just the IR Filter on and at the moment of taking it I liked the effect of the reflections of the internal lens and diaphragm of the camera, just for fun and "art", nothing really scientific on it

On Dec 28 2009 I took several images of the Sunspot 1039

Again the condition were not optimal as the seeing was not good

Moon and Jupiter

On september 1st while picking the mail the moon and jupiter looked gorgeous

Only one problem: the difference in luminosity didn't allow to me to capture both

Without burning the moon image

2 seconds exposure

I decided to take another picture with fast speed and get the moon alone

I also tried to keep the camera steady

1/200 second exposure

Then using GIMP (a freeware for manipulating images) merged the two images...

Well... I'm learning

And stretching the values of the images

Another try...

2 second exposure

1/200 second exposure

And the result... that I liked the most

Sunspot 1024

As a surprise the Sun has shown the Sunspot 1024

Mizar/Alcor

As part of my preparation for the Mercury transit in November 2006 I'm making tests with my afocal setup. In this  case pointed the scope to Mizar and Alcor (a double star circled in the picture) in the Big Dipper . In the old times the archers were chosen based on their ability to see the two stars with the naked eye
